Professional Experience
1997-Present Freelance Writer.  Orono, Maine and Halifax, Nova Scotia.   Creating, editing and proofreading materials for commercial, institutional and private clients. Recent projects have included promotional support materials for a fine art exhibit, resume preparation, on-line website editing, and proofreading a book-length manuscript for publication by the Orono Historical Society.
1982-Present Private Tutor.   Orono, Maine and Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Provided individualized assistance with writing for adult learners and non-native English speaking students.
1997-1998 Productions Director. WMEB 91.9 FM. University of Maine, Orono, Maine. Created and engineered public service announcements and show promotion spots.
1996-98 Summer School English Instructor.  Brewer High School, Brewer, Maine.   Taught 2 sections of Junior/Senior English concentrating on American Literature. Designed curriculum, choosing readings and developing materials centered on censorship themes and emphasizing Internet literacy, media consumerism and Freedom of Speech issues.
1996-97  Instructional Materials Specialist. University of Maine, Orono, Maine. Developed   Internet User Manual and instructional materials as a training aid and application resource guide for teachers and librarians in the Maine School and Library Network Project (MSLN). Produced application   overviews, step-by-step guides, quick guides, glossaries, FAQs, covering both Windows and Mac platforms for email programs, Usenet newsreaders, browsers,  FTP, and Telnet applications. Secured permission to reprint "Training the Trainer" resources, and scheduled training for teachers and librarians in central Maine.
1987-97 Substitute Teacher.  Penobscot Country, Maine. Teaching on call for Primary-12 students and assisting in classrooms for children with emotional, behavioral and developmental needs in area schools. Implemented lesson plans when they were provided and developed my own on the spot in their absence. Long-term Primary substitute 1995-1996 at St. John's School in Bangor.
1992-93 Proofreader.   University of Maine, Orono, Maine. Worked under strict deadlines with editor and contributors to produce Perspective, a 30-46 page, bi-monthly University of Maine Department of Public Information publication serving staff, faculty, students and alumni.
1992-93 "Get Acquainted Better" Program Coordinator.  Administered University of Maine student support program pairing international students with native English speakers for conversation and cultural exchange. Developed training materials for GAB partners, recruiting volunteers and conducted Fall and Spring training workshops. Assigned conversation partners and monitored program participants.
1989-90 Liaison Staff Person. Maine Foster Parents Association, Bangor, Maine.  Served as foster parents’ liaison with the Department of Human Services, the Maine Legislature, and the public. Produced six-page monthly newsletter. Represented MFPA before legislative hearings, coordinating media coverage and producing press releases, position papers and informational brochures. Developed and implemented program helping foster parents access Good Shepherd Food Bank. Set up Independent Living Library for teens leaving foster care. Spoke on foster parenting issues at support groups for foster parents.
1988-1989 Staff Writer. Brewer Register, Brewer, Maine.   Wrote weekly column, "Bangor Bemusements," editorials, and interviews. Photographed assigned features.
1988-89 Research Assistant/Interviewer Supervisor. Northeast Research, Orono, MaineWrote, pre-tested, and trained interviewers in administration of public health and policy surveys.
