I’d discovered this space, a small rock-pool high above the Atlantic, in 1997; from the first moment I saw it, I wanted to work with a figure in the space, but I didn’t have the chance to return to it for two years. I knew what I wanted, however, and when Megan and I arrived at the pool, it was a simple matter to frame up the image I’d held in my mind’s eye. Although I’d have preferred softer light, I managed to get a strong image, by using some careful over-exposure to increase the shadow detail, and then underdevelopment to control the highlight contrast.
