1999

When I initially considered traveling to photograph in Alberta, all my thoughts centered on the mountains, and the possibilities of working with the Nude against that background. In reality, the most stunning landscapes were those found elsewhere. Red Rock Coulee is probably the most haunting landscape I have ever set foot upon; it was surreal and desolate, and as we arrived shortly after sunset, very haunting in the fading twilight. This image was the last we made on this day, with the camera up on the rock, looking almost directly down upon Victoria with the widest angle lens I had. I couldn’t see all of the image from any one viewpoint, and framed it up by working on one side, and then hopping off the rock, scrambling around to the other, and climbing up to look at the other other. After this image, it was simply too dark to work anymore, so we began the three hours drive back to where we were staying.

This image was included in 1999’s Victoria, the Alberta Portfolio.
