This was an image that I had a hard time making. Though I felt it was strong, the openly “female” pose was intimidating for me at the time. So much of what I do is struggling against the stereotypes of “nude photography”; I have a lurking fear that if I create openly gendered images of the female figure, my intent will be misinterpreted and I will be slotted in with pornographers and their ilk. That said, I did make the image, and it has become one of my favourite of the water nudes. It is celebratory. Since 1996, I have become more comfortable with openly gendered imagery.
