Produced before I owned a wide angle lens for my view camera, this image was an attempt to capture the sheer mass of the huge rock, split in half by the incredible force of time and weather. The soft lines of Alicia against the rock and lichen set up a strong contrast, yet in the actual print, the goose-bumps on her skin mirror the textured stone, bringing the image back together again. I did make some 35mm infrared images of the entire rock, but the distortion from the 24mm lens, angling back to encompass the rock, was too extreme. Someday I hope to return to Hern Island and work with this rock again - it is truly breathtaking.
