By far, my preferred lighting set-up in the studio is two lights - one soft-box to the side, and then a rim-light high and to the back. The simplicity of this set-up yields well defined, sculptural images that have rich description of volume and form (as opposed to other lighting arrangements, which often describe texture or flat shapes). The above image of Layla is a perfect example of this lighting in use.
