York Redoubt

York Redoubt

The history of York Redoubt, and its surrounding sites spans three hundred years, from the Napoleonic wars to the Second World War. The York Shore Battery, a huge concrete emplacement at the foot of a steep hill serves as one of the largest gun batteries in Halifax, sweeping the Harbour's entrance. Upon the height of the hill stood the Fire Command Post for the entire Harbour's defences between 1939 and 1945.

Currently, York Redoubt is a National Historic Site within Parks Canada.
