In 1997, as a result of correspondence with Joy, a poet who then lived in Maine, USA, a totally new direction began in my work. Joy met me as a result of searching for examples of work which would have been considered illegal in the US if the "Communications Decency Act" had gone through. Used with permission. From a beginning discussing censorship and artistic depiction of the Nude, we began to discuss other topics, and she shared her poetry with me.
It was out of those poems that the work in this Gallery grew. Previously, the images I have produced came from deep inside, produced by the simple desire to create. The images displayed here however were born from the words and ideas of another. Joy's words challenged how I perceived the world, and gave me new insight into what surrounded me. Elements of the Light Images were present in the years leading up to 1997, but it wasn't until I spent time reading and reflecting upon Joy's poems that I made the final steps to reaching these images.
The creation of these images was cathartic for me - unlike my work with the Nude, these images came to me, I did not have a hand on the creation of them. It almost seemed like the photos were waiting for me, and it wasn't until I made a paradigm shift that I was ready to see them.
There is no way to explain what these images mean, or how they function. They stand alone, and yet are interwoven with all my other work that came before.
